Is your home the safe haven from the outside world that you think it is, or is it in need of a little improvement to ensure it really does come up to that standard? Everyone thinks the safest possible place for them is at home, but in reality more accidents happen at home than anywhere else. With the cause of the majority of these accidents down to human error, it appears that we are the ones that need to ensure our safety and not rely on the house itself to keep us safe. So what can we do to ensure that we are as safe as possible while at home? Following a few simple suggestions will help to ensure your safety:
You have to look for the potential for danger in the every day activities that take place around your home, from doing the cooking to DIY and then safety proof accordingly. Trips and falls around the home are a common source of injury so ensure carpets are secured and that you can’t catch your feet on anything that might cause you to stumble and fall. Children will always injure themselves but you can minimise the risk of that happening by ensuring the areas in which they play are free from hazards.
Cover plug sockets, secure heavy furniture and televisions to walls to prevent them from falling on and injuring your child, use door stops so children can’t catch their fingers in doors and make sure electrical cables aren’t left loose on the floor for them to trip on. Take a look at your garden too and ensure it is free from holes and uneven surfaces that could cause a fall and that ponds are covered or fenced off to prevent drowning.
Fire is another concern in the home so make sure you have fire alarms installed in your home and that all exits are left unblocked so you can escape quickly if you need to. Regularly test the batteries in your fire alarm and replace them when needed. If you have gas appliances in your home, invest in a carbon monoxide detector to ensure you aren’t affected by what is nicknamed the silent killer.
Burglary is a worry for everyone. The thought of someone invading your personal space is terrifying. A simple security review can help put your mind at rest and identify any potential weaknesses in the security of your home. Locksmith experts will be able to supply and fit a variety of locks for your home to ensure that there are no weak points of access. Burglars are known to be opportunists and so will seek out weak defences rather than a safely secured home, they simply wont target properties that aren’t easy to access incase they are disturbed. The longer they have to try to gain access to a property, the longer they have to be discovered after all.
By following these few simple steps you’ll be able to reduce your risk of injury and security issues at home in no time.
